MSc in Aquaculture

General information

Short description. The study starts with introduction courses in physiology, health care and water quality, before the fundamentals of genetics and breeding, fish nutrition and also practical and theoretical aspects of fish production and technology is covered. The aim of the study is to give the students broad practical and theoretical knowledge in different fields, before they complete their master thesis within a focus area, which can be chosen from fish breeding, fish nutrition, production technology or another area of interest, e.g. water or product quality. The master thesis project is normally taken over one year, and offers great flexibility in terms of project type and location.

Why study Aquaculture?

  • The aquaculture industry develops fast with an annual increase of 5-10%.
  • Productions are estimated to be doubled within 2020- 2030.

The aim of the study is to give the students broad practical and theoretical knowledge in different fields, before they complete their master thesis within a focus area which can be chosen from fish breeding, fish nutrition or production technology or another area of interest. The study starts with an introduction course in diseases and health in farmed fish, genetics and breeding, and in fish nutrition. A practical and theoretical course in fish production, product quality is also included.

  • Able to keep him-/herself up-to-date in scientific literature and new technology.
  • Able to place practical solutions into a broader social perspective, such as utilisation of resources, environment and animal welfare.

What can you use this qualification for? Manager in the fish farming industry, quality control, governmental or extension positions, developing new aquaculture species, managing breeding programs, sales or administration. The Master degree is also a stepping stone to an academic career.

 

Objective:

What will you learn? The programme gives you broad and interdisciplinary strength and specialisation in subjects of your choice. We offer courses in fish breeding, fish nutrition and planning and design of aquacultural plants, and you will get insight and knowledge about how those components/factors affect the effectiveness of production and influence the economic yield.

Cost:

Public Norwegian Universities do not charge tuition fees to their students, including international students. There is however a semester fee of NOK 340 in NMBU, for the student union.


Prerequisites:

Admission requirements: Bachelor degree that includes minimum: 60 credits biology, 10 credits mathematics, 10 credits chemistry/physics and 10 credits statistics courses. English at a level equivalent to the requirements set by the TOEFL test or similar, with results approved by NMBU.

Degree Requirements
A Bachelor or equivalent degree, including minimum 10 credits mathematics, 10 credits in chemistry/physics, 10 credits in statistics and 60 credits in biology.

Language Requirements
Applicants who are not native speakers of English must document their proficiency in English with one of the following internationally recognized tests:

  • TOEFL: minimum score of 550 (580*) for a paper based test, or minimum 80 (92*) on an internet-based test.
  • IELTS: academic, with a minimum score of 6.0. (7.0, from admission to autumn 2016).
  • Applicants with Norwegian upper secondary school: Foundation/level 1 course in English at upper secondary school (5 weekly periods) with the mark 4 or better (alternatively, a pass in the English Advanced course I and/or II).

Register your application in the online application system: "Søknadsweb". After the online registration, you will be asked to submit the following supporting documents:

  • Copy of passport
  • Officially certified copies of all your educational certificates, including higher secondary education and higher education (transcript of records from university/college).
  • Original TOEFL (official score report) or IELTS results, sent directly from the test centres.
